10 Important Content Marketing Tips You Should Know Right Now

1.     Have clear goals

Know what it is that you are trying to achieve. Distil your aims into one or two simple ideas. This will keep you focused and stop you from getting distracted by making the best blog ever, rather than creating random off-topic blogs.

2.     Know precisely who your target audience is and appeal specifically to them

It can be tempting to cast a wide net and pull as many people to your site as possible. The problem with this is that if you pull people who aren’t interested in what you’re selling then it was a waste of time and energy. It is better to focus on getting the right people to your site. It is better to have a fewer hits, most of which convert to sales than it is to have many visitors and no sales.

3.     Create a content schedule...and stick to it!

At the start of your project decide how often you are going to release content and stick to it. This will keep your viewers engaged and it will keep you organised. On a personal note - this can sometimes be very hard. With our recent business growth and sponsorship, I've found myself with little time to dedicate to writing these useful articles. However, it is important to remember that as soon as you fin yourself straying from your schedule...get back to it!

4.     Be prepared to reuse and re-purpose popular content

If you create something that is popular then find ways to build on that. Take a blog post and turn it into an infographic, or a how to guide.

5.     Make content that is timeless

The buzzword for this is 'evergreen content'. You want to have content that will continue to attract people months after you post it. Content that is rooted in current events will quickly seem stale and the number of hits will swiftly drop off.

6.     Look around at what others are doing

Keep an eye on what other content creators are doing. This doesn’t mean that you should just copy other people, but by staying engage with your competitors you will be able to find ideas that you can expand on. The more you view the more ideas you will have.

7.     Quality matters

People are not going to keep reading if the content you provide is rubbish. I’m not talking about grammar or spelling, really, only the most egregious errors will have a major impact. What I’m talking about is content that has no substance to it. If people are going to keep reading they want to get something out of it.

8.     ... So, does quantity

You need to be providing a reasonable amount of content on a regular basis. One post a month will not do it, to maximise your web traffic you want to be posting about once or twice per week.

9.     Refresh older content

Constantly generating new ideas can be challenging so if you have an older piece that has done well, why not give it an update, and make a few tweaks, then republish it. This will allow you to benefit from Google’s algorithm which preferentially selects newer content.

10. Serialise content

If you have a good idea then don’t just make it a one off, try and find a way to serialise it. It will allow you to capitalise on a great idea and it will also help to build a dedicated following, as your viewers will have an idea of what it is they will be getting, and if they like it they will keep on coming back for more time and time again.
